In 1998, to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the famous Karakalpak poet and philosopher Berdakh, a museum after his name was established in Nukus. The museum is located near the Karakalpak State University.
Berdakh is also considered one of the first Karakalpak historians. In his famous work Shezhire he revealed the Karakalpak genealogy and provided information about Turkic people.
The museum mainly presents exhibitions that are devoted to the history of Karakalpak literature. The Manuscript Hall that contains written records in Arabic, Persian and Turkish is of particular interest to visitors. The museum also exhibits magnificent national jewellery and clothing, household items and archaeological findings.
