Results of the International Aral Tourism Week 2025: Environmental initiatives for sustainable development in Karakalpakstan

The Aral Sea region is a unique natural area located in the heart of Eurasia, surrounding the former Aral Sea. Over the past few decades, this land has faced serious ecological and social challenges due to the depletion and pollution of the water body, which has significantly affected the state of the environment and the quality of life for people far beyond the region. Therefore, the development of the Aral region has become not only a local but also a global task, requiring a comprehensive approach and the collaboration of various countries and organizations.

From April 17 to 19, 2025, Karakalpakstan became the center of tourism activity during the annual International Aral Tourism Week. The republic hosted vibrant and significant events that attracted the attention of both local residents and tourists.

The three-day event featured a vibrant cultural and educational program. Guests had the unique opportunity to visit the famous State Museum of Arts named after I.V. Savitsky, where they could admire a rich collection of artworks.

Significant attention was also given to the ethnographic tourism center "Karakalpak Ethno Village," which offered an immersive experience into the culture and traditions of the Karakalpak people. Participants visited the historical and cultural complex of Mizdahkan, where they learned about the history and culture of the region. It was a unique opportunity not only to explore the heritage of Karakalpakstan but also to enjoy the atmosphere of friendliness and hospitality that this remarkable region is known for.

The program of the Aral Tourism Week also included events such as a tree planting campaign organized as part of the national project "Yashil Makon", as well as a walking marathon from the public initiative "10,000 Steps". These initiatives not only contributed to the greening of the region but also raised awareness about the importance of ecology and an active lifestyle. The tree planting campaign became a symbol of the local population's commitment to improving the ecological situation and restoring the natural environment of Karakalpakstan. Participants contributed to the creation of green spaces that will not only beautify the area but also enhance the air quality in the region.

The walking marathon "10,000 Steps" provided an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to come together and show their support for a healthy lifestyle. This event turned into a true celebration, promoting the habit of regular physical activity and strengthening social connections among participants.

On the second day, the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Goodwill Ambassadors of the Aral Sea" commenced. This unique platform gathered over 180 participants, including representatives from government agencies, specialists from environmental institutions, educational establishments, international organizations, foreign experts, and media, to discuss pressing issues related to the region's development and to exchange ideas and successful practices.

Special attention at the conference was dedicated to the issues of restoring the ecosystem of the Aral Sea region, including increasing the area of afforestation on the dried seabed, reducing soil salinity, promoting rational water use, and developing sustainable tourism.

The annual gastronomic festival "99 types of Aral Sea fish dishes" was filled with an atmosphere of culinary creativity.

Guests and participants of the Aral Tourism Week had the opportunity to sample exquisite dishes crafted by talented chefs from Karakalpakstan, who skillfully combined tradition with innovation.

The competition among chefs and the selection of the winner became a vibrant highlight of the event, adding a sense of spectacle and excitement.

The evening concert program by "Open-air" created an unforgettable festive atmosphere.

Thus, the events included in the program of the International Aral Week are aimed at the comprehensive development of the Aral Sea region and the preservation of its cultural heritage. They contribute to promoting the tourism potential, stabilizing the ecological situation, and enhancing the international image of the area. Drawing attention to the rich culture and unique natural resources of Karakalpakstan opens new horizons for tourists and researchers, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable land, its history, and traditions.
