About the project

The website on Karakalpakstan is developed by the UNESCO Office in Tashkent in the framework of the UN Joint Programme on “Building the Resilience of Communities affected by the Aral Sea Disaster through a Multi-Partner Human Security Fund for the Aral Sea” funded by the UN Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS) and in cooperation with the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for the Tourism Development. Within the framework of this Programme, UNESCO promotes the sustainable livelihoods of the local population notably through the development of sustainable tourism and craftsmanship, including strengthening the national capacity, promoting and awareness raising about the richness and diversity of the cultural and natural heritage of Karakalpaktan.

Within the Programme, a series of practical trainings on the traditional crafts of Karakalpakstan and innovative design were conducted by international and national experts. Moreover, the international scientific conference and round table on development of sustainable tourism in Karakalpakstan, including branding, were held with the participation of local and international experts. Also, support was provided to the Crafts Development Centre under the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan in Nukus.

The aim of the website is to present and promote the unique historical, cultural and natural heritage of Karakalpakstan and contribute to the sustainable development of the region. The website also provides useful and practical information for visitors to Karakalpakstan.

We hope that this website helps shed light on the diverse cultural and natural heritage of Karakalpakstan and sparks your interest to explore the region further.
